The microbiome forms the crux of healthy living, so it makes sense that any health programme focuses on restoring this crucial function. What is the microbiome? It comprises of microbes which inhabit our gut and skin as well as our oral and nasal cavities. These microbes continuously interact with the environment and help determine how our immune system functions (link). Inflammation caused by an imbalance in gut bacteria can lead to disease (link). Conversely, a balanced microbiome is associated with positive health (link). Everything we do affects our microbiome – not just what we eat. For example – walking, travelling, gardening, sunlight, hugging, laughing, the air we breathe all change the microbiome.
